Wooden Window Bird Feeder - Big Garden Birdwatch
'via Blog this'
RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2012
The RSPB have compiled results from the Big Garden Birdwatch each year for the past 30 years to create a snapshop of how many birds there are in each region. Over 600,000 people took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch last year! (RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2011 results)This month, on the weekend of January 2012, the 28th and 29th, please put one hour aside and spend some time appreciating the birds in your garden or in a local park such as Sedgefield Hardwick Park, Whitworth Park in Spennymoor or Preston Park etc...
The Big Garden Birdwatch is great fun for all the family and helps the RSPB to keep track of our birds and to to ensure they get the proper attention they need! This is also a great opportunity to get your children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren involved! Simply take a pen and paper and write down how many of each species of bird you see during that hour and send the results in to the RSPB.
I've found that a great way to bring the birds in your garden as close to you as possible, is by using a window bird feeder.
These are especially useful to anyone with only a small garden or yard, but are an essential item to any bird lover! We have been using one of these for a few weeks now and it doesn't take very long to entice the birds to your window at all. I really can't think of a better way to get a closer view of all the little birdies!
These wooden window bird feeders are currently being sold on ebay here:I like these wooden window bird feeders alot because they blend in beautifually with natural surroundings and in my opinion - look alot nicer than the plastic window bird feeders you can get. The wooden window bird feeders also attach on the window with rubber suction cups which means you can easily move them elsewhere to if you need to - although if you do, I will say that initially it takes a little patience and persistent refilling for the birds to get familiar with the location of the bird feeder, so don't move it around too much, or you might confuse the hungry little things!
Lastly, these appear to be the only ones on ebay right now that come with a free bag of birdseed, so if you're relatively new to bird watching or fancy taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch for the first time, then this would be the ideal thing to get you started with!

How to take part
So, you want to take part in Big Garden Birdwatch? That's really great news as it couldn't be easier to take part in, and your results will really help us.
If you're one of our regulars – welcome back, and thanks for what you're doing. If you're new, keep reading to find out just how easy doing Big Garden Birdwatch is.
When, what, where
All you need is a pen, some scrap paper (or, a printout of our handy bird ID sheet), and an hour to spend watching the birds in your garden, or local park, on either Saturday 28, or Sunday 29 January 2012.
Simply make a note of the highest number of each bird species seen on the ground (not flying over) at any one time, and come back to these page to tell us what you saw.
You can also ask questions, and share your tips for a brilliant birdwatch on our friendly Big Garden Birdwatch community group.
You can do your birdwatch on your own with a cuppa, your favourite biscuit and your feet up, or try and beat the largest group that took part in 2011: 84 adults and 2 children.
